What is Ataxia?

What is Ataxia?

By Dana Bubenko, BMR-PT, Physiotherapist

Ataxia is a neurological condition that makes it difficult to control arm and leg movements (coordination).  It's usually associated with poor trunk/core stability. All of these symptoms can make it difficult to walk, and to balance when standing.

Ataxia can also affect the visual and vestibular systems, which contributes to balance problems. (Learn more about the vestibular system here).

Ataxia is usually caused by an injury or disease process involving the cerebellum, which is part of your brain. But can also be caused by other parts of your nervous system too.

Should I Come to Physiotherapy if I Have Ataxia?

Absolutely! A neuro-oriented physiotherapist can help you improve your balance, standing, walking, and other movements important to your day-to-day life.

For instance, we can give you targeted exercises to improve the stability in your trunk - helping you sit or stand more easily. We also use tools such as weighting to give your arms and legs more stability in an upright posture.

Most importantly though, a neuro-physiotherapist can challenge you in ways that you cannot challenge yourself at home. This extra challenge gives your brain a "kick-start" for improving how you move ("motor learning"), like a shot of adrenaline! A customized challenge is critical for helping your brain learn new skills.

Which is Better for Ataxia: One-on-One Physiotherapy or Neuro Group Classes?

While individual (one-on-one) sessions are ideal, I recognize that many people have limited insurance/funding. I also offer a Neuro Group Class where you can work on your skills in a group environment, which is a more affordable option for those that need it.
