Neurological Rehabilitation

Live Better

"Neurological rehabilitation" is the process of recovering from a brain or nerve condition.  It's when our our brain, spinal cord, and nerves recover and change in a way that improves how we function.

Our brain, spinal cord and nerves make up our nervous system.  Our nervous system is complex and adaptive, and it controls all the parts of our body.

Our physiotherapists are trained to treat a wide range of neurological injuries and conditions. These include conditions that affect the central nervous system (i.e. the brain and spinal cord) such as:

Our physiotherapists also treat injuries and conditions affecting the peripheral nervous system (i.e. the nerves that communicate between your brain and spinal cord and the other parts of your body).  These conditions include:

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome,
  • Bell’s Palsy,
  • Cervical radiculopathy, and
  • Lumbar radiculopathy (commonly described as "sciatica").

After completing an assessment, your physiotherapist will talk to you about your short term and long term goals.  They will work with you to develop a treatment plan to get you to your goals.

Everyone's goals are different.  For example, you may want to lift your granddaughter again, hold a serving platter at Christmas dinner, bike to the lake with your spouse, or simply get dressed without help.

Physiotherapy programs to meet patients' goals can include techniques to relieve pain, improve balance, improve coordination, and improve walking or running.  Custom exercise programs are often appropriate for neurological conditions, since strength, movement and day-to-day function are often affected.  Group classes, such as our neurological rehab classes, may be appropriate for people recovering from stroke or living with other neurological conditions.

With nearly all neurological conditions, the sooner rehabilitation begins, the better the results.

Not sure if neurological rehabilitation is right for you?  Call us for a FREE 15-minute phone consultation with one of our professional physiotherapists, to determine if we can help.
